“The Joys of sight restoration is incomparable with anything in the world. It is like giving life back to the living. It is for this joy that TEC (Tilganga Eye Centre) and its staff are compassionate and dedicated for... to give first class eye care.”

Lisa Ling, National geographic/MSNBC Ultimate explorer correspondent
“It was fascinating to see the (IOL manufacturing) facility. The process of making sure the IOLs are of high quality...well polished…it was amazing that the standards are so high. I don’t think there’s a lens factory in the world that is of a higher standard.”

Dr. Edward Wilson, Chairman, Storm Eye Institute, South Carolina, USA

Staff Profile

Nepal Eye Program was officially launched in July 1992 to support the prevention & control of blindness program in
Nepal and the region.

TEC ( TILGANGA EYE CENTRE)

TEC is the implementing body of the Nepal Eye Program, a non profit, community based, non-government organization. With an aim to act as a model for treatment research and training, independent of, but in co operation with all other eye care centres and organizations in Nepal, the current TEC facility was opened in 1994.

TEC NOW INCORPORATES SIX DIVISIONS

  • A full-service advanced clinical facility for eye care which delivers state-of-the-art services to patients.  (Photo)
  • An education & training department which runs MD Residency Program in Ophthalmology, Certificate of Health Science (Ophthalmology) and short applied training for local & international medical personnel and eye health workers. (Photo)
  • An outreach unit which runs rural district community eye centres and high-volume microsurgical eye clinics for the rural community throughout Nepal and committed similar efforts regularly in China, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Cambodia and North Korea. (photo)
  • An eye bank which undertakes cornea harvesting activity to provide corneas for corneal transplant operations and awareness programs for overcoming resistance to eye donation. (Photo)
  • A manufacturing facility which specialises in the production of world-class, state-of-the-art intraocular lenses (IOLs) for use in modern cataract surgery. The focus is always on affordability and uncompromised quality. (Photo)
  • A research unit which focuses on improving clinical as well as operational activities. TEC has continuously involved itself in research activities for the development of eye care.

Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP), USA www.cureblindness.org and The Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF), International  www.hollows.org and are TEC’s integral international partners.
